Who wants to have someone in his apartment when you are gone? But with a few useful tips and irrigation tricks, you do not have to worry about it. So survive your plants also 2 weeks and you can relax your holiday enjoy.

General tips to help your plants need less water

  1. Do not put your plants in the bright sun. Time-controlled blinds do not have everyone, so the plants should be placed in a shady place. However, one should not completely rob them of the light. Place the potatoes in the garden at the cool north side of the house, if possible.
  2. So that the earth does not dry out too quickly, cover the earth's surface with a layer bark . This reduces the evaporation of the water.
  3. Pour on stock (conditional)
Too much water damages most plants just as little as the cool water. For a few days, you can still bridle if you increase the amount of water during pouring in the days before. Too much water leaves the roots rotten. In the overhead, the water should therefore be at most one centimeter high.
  4. Just before leaving, you should treat your potted plants to a bath. Place the pots in water, until no more air bases rise. So the earth is very moist and the first days are already bridged. Again, do not exaggerate, otherwise rotten the roots.
  5. Other options: Growing your plants to low water
The alternative to watering on stock is to limit the irrigation of the plants before the holiday to the necessary. This stimulates the roots to form more branches, so that the plant can also use the water from the deeper soil layers. This also applies to plants in your garden. In the bed you should loosen the ground with a hoe again. This destroys thin, thin channels, where water otherwise rises and evaporates senselessly. Remove dried leaves and flowers. Your plants should no longer be put into the maintenance of dead parts of plants. This also prevents fungal attack.
  6. Do not mow the lawn before the holiday. If it gets really hot in the time you're gone, the freshly mown lawn might dry up. Leave it long and water again before leaving.

Irrigation self-made with bottle trick

Some plants are not so demanding and need less water. For these plants you need not directly a special irrigation system. A plastic bottle filled with water is closed and small holes punched into the lid. Now put the bottle upside down about a third into the flower box. Now the bottle gradually releases its water into the soil and supplies the plants with moisture for a long time.
